SERMON NOTES - THE POWER OF PURSUIT

By nature, we pursue what we don’t have.

God’s Foundational truths in regard to marriage—

#1: NEXT TO CHRIST, MY SPOUSE IS MY PRIORITY.

#2: I WILL PURSUE MY SPOUSE ALWAYS

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. Genesis 2:24

“united” - Hebrew—dabaq (daw-bak’); cling or adhere; to catch by pursuit, be joined (together), pursue hard and relentlessly.

Other Scriptural ways the word “dabaq” is translated—

I follow close behind you… Psalm 63:8 TLB

…They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted. Job 41:17 NIV

My bone clings to my skin and to my flesh… Job 19:20 NKJV

They…pursued them relentlessly … Judges 20:45 NKJV

Jacob lay with Rachel…and he loved Rachel…And he worked for Laban another seven years. Genesis 29:30 NIV

A man should fulfil his duty as a husband, and a woman should fulfil her duty as a wife, and each should satisfy the other’s needs. 1 Cor.7:3 GNB

MEN—PURSUE HER WITH YOUR:

1) CONVERSATION

2) THOUGHTFULNESS

3) AFFECTION

4) PROTECTION

WOMEN—PURSUE HIM WITH YOUR:

1) ADMIRATION

2) REASSURANCE

3) SUPPORT

4) NAKEDNESS

[ 1 Cor.7:4-5; Col.3:18;Eph.5:33; Prov.31:10-31; Titus 2:4-5]

TO GET WHAT YOU HAVE NEVER HAD, YOU MUST DO—WHAT YOU HAVE NEVER DONE.

TO GET WHAT YOU ONCE HAD, YOU MUST DO WHAT YOU ONCE DID.

Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. Revelation 2:5 NIV

CHRIST IS PURSUING YOU

Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? Luke 15:4 NIV

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Isa.55:6 TNIV

A.C.Neilsen survey – “Three-quarters of Australians view marriage as a commitment for life and the majority of unmarried Australian adults (18 and over) say marriage is one of their life- time goals.

Marriage Vows—To have and to hold, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish …

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Gen.1:31 TNIV

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Gen.2:18 TNIV

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, & he brought her to the man.
The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”

‘”one” - echad - united, one, completely joined.

Foundation truth about marriage—

AFTER CHRIST, YOUR SPOUSE IS YOUR PRIORITY.

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. Gen.2:24 TNIV

“Leave” - azab - loosen or relinquish.

…it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the
flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Gal.2:20 TNIV

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… Ephesians 5:25 TNIV
The things that destroy many marriages are good things not bad things.

The good things can become the enemy of the best things.

2 ways to make sure your spouse is the priority in marriage after Christ—

1) PRACTICE THE PRIORITY.

MATTHEW 18:21-35

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive someone who sins against me? Up to seven times?”22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he & his wife & his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26 The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go. 28 But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.29 His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’30 But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.32 Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said,‘I cancelled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive a brother or sister from your heart.” TNIV

“You are only hurting yourself with your anger!” Job 18:4 GNB
