Moved by God
The central activity of God that runs right through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and everything in between is the redemption and restoration of the world. In a word, “mission”.
What evidence is there in the Scriptures for that?
The Old Testament
Look at the examples of Gods response to the falI right there in the Garden.
The call of, and promise to Abraham
God’s love extended beyond the Israelites to the likes of Rahab, Ruth and Namaan – foreigners yet all part of God’s plan of redemption and reconciliation.
God’s heart of mission expressed in the call and journey of Jonah.
The New Testament
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” John 3:16,17
“The spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (Jesus) Luke 4:18,19
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” Matthew 28:19,20
The result – “many will come from the east and the west and take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 8:11
and “after this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb ..” Revelation 7:9a
Am I moved by God’s heart for those outside the Kingdom? Do I want to engage with Him in the work of the Kingdom?
Let’s ask ourselves some key questions
1. Have I really commenced a relationship with Jesus?
…. or do I just know about God. Is my life being transformed by the Spirit’s power?
2. Have I told God I want to be used by Him?
3. Am I listening to the Spirit’s prompting each day?
Prayer is the first and continuing active step in our engagement in mission. To be engaged in mission without the power of the Spirit is futile.
Reflect on the prompting of the Spirit in the life of Philip (Acts 8); Ananias (Acts 9) and Peter (Acts 10)
4. Do I Start Where People Are?
Pauls example in Acts 17.
5. Am I too judgemental?
6. Be bold and go for it!
As God moves us, let’s move forward in His power, to impact the world in which we live.

What is the relationship between Easter and “finding my purpose in life”?
God wants to use me
That’s the simple reason we are still here. God has a purpose for us NOW.
“Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 2 Cor 5:18-20
What does God want to do through me?
John chapters 13-17
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
“But you are the ones, chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night and day difference He has made for you – from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” 1 Peter 2:9 (Message)
How can I fulfill the purpose that God has for me?
1 Be constant in prayer
Read Solomon’s story in 1 Kings 9 & 10. He lost his focus.
Prayer keeps our focus right.
Personal check: Am I truly praying for God’s purpose to be lived out in my life or just asking Him to bless my plans?
2 Get engaged individually
Personal check: What are the experiences of life that taught me lessons about myself and lessons about God?
Be prepared to share those with others.
What interests has God given you – sport, art, crafts, photography, gardening?
Personal check: How are my relationships with those outside the church ?
3 Get engaged through church based ministries
Ministries like the following are all focused on Reaching others.
Playtime, Step-Beyond Adventures, Sports Centre, Love Thy Neighbour, Friday Night Chicago, Men’s Shed, Kidsmania, “Wunan House, Mission trips etc
Personal check: Have you got gifts that can be used in any of these ministries? Is this a way God has provided for you to fulfill your purpose?
Personal check: Is God laying some particular call to mission on your heart?
Are you willing to be His hands and feet?

“… and you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14
“When the people heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’ Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptised every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2;37-38
We have all of the Holy Spirit at conversion, but the question is, does He, the Holy Spirit have all of us?
So then, what is meant by these passages of Scripture that are clearly written to Christians that urge us to be filled with the Spirit?
What are my expectations of life in the Spirit?
“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom His whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen”
Ephesians 3:14
Reflections:
Am I truly praying that God would open my eyes to see more of who He is? Is my prayer that the Spirit of God will fill every aspect of my life to the full? Am I content to stay where I am in my spiritual journey or do I want to know God more intimately?
What is my experience of the Spirit?
… not an experience of Church … but an experience with God by His Spirit.
God wants us to experience Him day by day. The power of His Spirit is available for us to appropriate and use in a way that impacts our world for the purpose of His kingdom. So where are you on the journey?
Reflection:
How is my spiritual life going?
How is my walk?
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh” Galatians 5:16
And a true journey of faith with God will bring transformation – eg Peter on Day of Pentecost.
Reflections:
How has my life changed? Or better still – How is my life changing?
Is my life being transformed as I walk in the Spirit?
Is the fruit of the Spirit more evident in my life?
So how can we live in the power of the Spirit?
By simply in faith asking each day that He will do His work in us as He:
Convicts us of our need for repentance (John 16:8-11)
Confirms our position as children of God the Father (Romans 8:15)
Changes our character to produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
Counsels us in truth; guiding, instructing and revealing (John 14:16-18; John 16:12-15; 1 Cor 2:9-12)
Comforts us with His peace as a deposit from heaven (John 14:27; 2 Cor. 5:5-7)
Gifts and empower us (Acts 1:8; Acts 4:31; 2 Tim 1:7)
